BOSTON — The Coast Guard is monitoring a 1,000 gallon fuel oil spill in the Charles River.
Massachusetts Department of Enviromenatal Protection is the lead government agency in charge of response.
The heating oil spill occurred at the Massachusetts Water Resource Authority in Cambridge, Mass., at about 3:45 a.m. The facility contacted the Coast Guard stating approximately 2,000 gallons of #2 heating oil escaped due to what the facility believes to be a valve malfunction. Of the fuel spilled, 1,000 gallons has been contained on the facility in containment areas.
Clean Harbors has been contracted by the facility for clean up.
At this time the Coast Guard, Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, Massachusetts State Police, Cambridge Police and the Cambridge Fire Department have all been notified and have representatives on scene coordinating the cleanup of the spill.
