Coast Guard members to be honored for heroic efforts

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – On July 4, 2009, Station Hatteras Inlet crewmembers, Petty Officer 2nd Class Michael Buchanan and Petty Officer 2nd Class Steven Atkinson, entered the blast zone and helped evacuate injured people after a fireworks truck exploded at Ocracoke Island, N.C.

Buchanan administered first aid to victims and helped other rescue workers arriving on-scene remove several burn victims while Atkinson, helped keep non-essential personnel out of the blast zone and helped emergency personnel extinguish multiple fires in the area.

The explosion resulted in four deaths and critically injured seven people.

Their actions resulted in one life being saved and prevented further injuries to others in the area.

On Friday Rear Admiral Wayne Justice will present Petty Officer Buchanan with the Coast Guard Medal and Petty Officer Atkinson with a Coast Guard Commendation Medal for there actions.
