Coast Guard members host hurricane awareness event for families in Clearwater, Fla.

CLEARWATER, Fla. — Crewmembers at Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater hosted a hurricane awareness event for crewmembers and thier families at the air station, Friday.

At the event crewmembers prepared Coast Guard spouses and families for the upcoming hurricane season by providing clarity on how the unit operates when a hurricane is approaching and what steps dependants should take for their families during this time and if an evacuation should occur.

“Surviving a hurricane starts before the first storm of the season has formed, said Lt. Cmdr. Lou Hodac, public affairs officer at the air station. “While the Coast Guard’s primary mission is saving lives at sea; even our guardians must prepare their families at home long before they are called into action. Preparation is the key to success; and in extreme circumstances, as with a hurricane, being prepared can make the difference between life and death.”
