Coast Guard members donate hair for charity

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (D5 Public Affairs) – Six local Coast Guard members from Coast Guard Integrated Support Command Portsmouth, Va., are scheduled to participate in a Locks of Love charity event Wednesday, July 16 at ISC Portsmouth.

The six participants will donate their hair to Locks of Love, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing high quality hair prosthetics to children under the age of 18. Most of the children helped by the organization have lost their hair due to a medical condition called alopecia areata, which has no known cause or cure.

“I’ve been growing my hair out over two years now and when I realized it would be long enough to donate, that is when the planning for the event started,” said Lt. Cdr. Kerry Karwan, a participant of the event. “I’ve volunteered at children’s hospitals and have seen first hand the challenges they face. This is just another way for me to help kids.”
