Coast Guard medically evacutes crewmember off Canadian freighter

CLEVELAND – An aircrew from U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Detroit medically evacuated a 43-year-old crewmember from a 730-foot, Canadian-flagged bulk carrier in Lake Erie about 24 nautical miles north of Fairport, Ohio, at about 1 p.m., Monday.

The aircrew involved was refueling their MH-65C Dolphin rescue helicopter in Erie, Pa., after participating in a search for a person in the water near Geneva State Park, Ohio.

The crewmember’s name is not being released.

Crewmembers aboard the motor vessel Frontenac contacted Joint Rescue Coordination Centre Trenton, Ontario, explaining that the crewmember was reportedly experiencing chest pains, numbness and blurred vision.

The aircrew transported to crewmember to Burke Lakefront Airport in Cleveland, to waiting EMS.
