Coast Guard medically evacuates woman from Kelleys Island

9th Coast Guard District NewsCLEVELAND — A U.S. Coast Guard boatcrew from Station Marblehead, Ohio, medically evacuated an 86-year-old woman who was experiencing chest pain on Kelleys Island in Lake Erie Friday night.

EMTs on Kelleys Island contacted search and rescue controllers at Coast Guard Sector Detroit to request a medical evacuation due to the woman’s health history.

A flight surgeon, who makes the ultimate determination on what warrants emergency transport, was contacted and briefed and authorized the medevac.

A boatcrew from Station Marblehead launched aboard a 33-foot Special Purpose Craft–Law Enforcement boat. Once on the island, the boatcrew embarked the woman and transferred her to awaiting emergency medical services in Marblehead, Ohio, for further transport to Magruder Hospital in Port Clinton, Ohio.
