Coast Guard medically evacuates man from fishing vessel 100 miles west of Newport, Oregon

ASTORIA, Ore. — The Coast Guard medically evacuated a man from a fishing vessel 100 miles west of Newport, Ore., Monday.

Coast Guard Group/Air Station North Bend recieved a call from the 45-foot fishing vessel Sea Spirit at approximately 11 a.m. that a crewmember aboard the vessel was complaining of chest pains. An HH-65 helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Facility Newport was launched to retrieve the man and fly him to the Newport Hospital while a separate HH-65 crew from North Bend provided additional radio support.

The missions of Group/Air Station North Bend and Air Facility Newport include maritime search and rescue, enforcement of laws and treaties, providing aids to navigation and marine environmental protection. In addition, the Air Station frequently assists federal, state and county agencies by responding to calls for assistance with inland searches and medical evacuations of injured loggers.
