Coast Guard medically evacuates injured man from Beaver Island

CLEVELAND – A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter crew from Air Station Traverse City, Mich., is en route to medically evacuate a 54-year-old man who reportedly crashed his car on Beaver Island, Mich., Thursday evening.

Injured is Gordon Heikka, hometown unknown.

The Traverse City aircrew was preparing to return to the air station in their MH-65C Dolphin rescue helicopter after responding to another incident near Keweenaw, Mich., when they were diverted to medevac Heikka.

Heikka is reportedly in stable condition but first responders don’t know the full extent of his injuries and want him to be evaluated at a hospital. There isn’t a hospital on Beaver Island.

The aircrew expects to arrive at Beaver Island at about 9 p.m. EST and will bring Heikka aboard to fly him to Air Station Traverse City, where EMS will be waiting to transfer him to a local hospital.
