Coast Guard medically evacuates fisherman near Hernando Beach

HERNANDO BEACH, Fla – The Coast Guard medically evacuated a 52-year-old fisherman near Hernando Beach, Saturday.

Rescued was: Richard James Arthur of Brooksville, Fla.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg received a call at 11:15 p.m., Friday, from Arthur who reported he was suffering from chest pains and required medical assistance. Arthur was aboard his 33-foot fishing boat, Nikki Marie, when he made the distress call.

Coast Guard Station Yankeetown launched a 27-foot rescue boat crew, while a nearby good Samaritan came to the assistance of Arthur, taking his vessel in tow to meet with the Coast Guard rescue crew.

The Coast Guard boatcrew rendezvoused with the good Samaritan at 1:30 a.m., safely transferred Arthur aboard, and transported him to Hernando Beach, where Hernando County Fire and Rescue Emergency Medical Services awaited.

Arthur’s condition is unknown.

The Coast Guard recommends all boaters to always wear lifejackets, file a float plan, carry a VHF marine radio and have an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon every time they get underway.
