CLEVELAND — The Coast Guard conducted a medical evacuation from Kelleys Island in Lake Erie early Sunday morning.
At 3:25 a.m., a search-and-rescue controller at Coast Guard Sector Detroit was contacted by emergency medical services personnel from Kelleys Island who requested a medical evacuation for a 72-year-old man reportedly suffering from chest pain. After consulting with the Coast Guard’s on-duty flight surgeon, it was determined that a medical evacuation was needed.
A boat crew from Coast Guard Station Marblehead, Ohio, launched aboard a 33-foot Special Purpose Craft-Law Enforcement. They arrived at the island, took the man and an EMT aboard the SPC-LE, and transported them back to the station.
The man was transported by EMS via ambulance to Magruder Hospital in Port Clinton, Ohio.
