Coast Guard medically evacuates 83-year-old man from cruise ship

NEW YORK – The Coast Guard medically evacuated an 83-year-old man from a cruise ship 38 miles south of Shinnecock, N.Y., Wednesday, July 13, 2011.

A crewmember of the cruise ship Rotterdam notified the Coast Guard to request medical assistance for the man who was reportedly suffering from a stroke.

A Coast Guard flight surgeon was consulted and determined the man’s condition needed immediate medical attention and recommended he be transported off the vessel.

A Coast Guard rescue helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod, Mass., transported the man to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, R.I..  He was in stable condition.
