Coast Guard Medevacs Victim of ATV Accident

KODIAK, Alaska – The Coast Guard medevaced a 16-year-old boy after he was injured while on an all terrain vehicle near Cordova Wednesday afternoon.

The accident was reported to Coast Guard Sector Anchorage at 1:37 p.m., by the vessel Ex-Factor on VHF channel 16. They informed the Coast Guard that the boy was injured on the beach in Boswell Bay on the East Side of Hinchinbrook Island.

The duty Coast Guard flight surgeon in Kodiak was contacted and recommended the boy be medevaced to Cordova based on the nature of his injuries.

At 2 p.m., a Coast Guard HH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak was diverted from patrol near Seward to conduct the medevac.

The helicopter arrived within 50 minutes and landed on the beach. The rescue swimmer and aviation maintenance technician provided first aid to the injured boy and used a raft to safely transport him to the helicopter.

He was flown to the hospital in Cordova in stable condition for further medical treatment.
