Coast Guard medevacs shark bite victim

CLEARWATER, Fla. – Coast Guard crews medically evacuated a 49 -year-old man suffering from a shark bite about 50 miles northwest of Tarpon Springs, Fla., on Sunday.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg received a call at about 8:45 a.m. from the crew of the 40-foot commercial fishing vessel Miss Irene, homeported in Tarpon Springs, reporting that crewmember Mike Seymore was bitten in the leg by a shark while attempting to remove a fishing hook.

The Coast Guard immediately launched a Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater MH-60 Jayhawk rescue helicopter crew. They arrived on scene and safely hoisted Seymore at about 10 30 a.m., and transferred him to Tampa General Hospital, in Tampa, Fla.

His condition is unknown.
