PORTSMOUTH, Va. – The Coast Guard transported an injured sailor to Naval Medical Center Portsmouth Wednesday from a Navy ship 13 miles east of Virginia Beach.
Navy Second Fleet personnel contacted Coast Guard watchstanders in Portsmouth at about 5 p.m. requesting a medevac for a sailor with lacerations aboard the USS Ashland (LSD48).
Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C., launched a rescue helicopter crew to hoist the sailor. He was taken to the medical center for treatment.
