Coast Guard medevacs man injured on Kelleys Island

9th Coast Guard District NewsCLEVELAND — A U.S. Coast Guard boatcrew from Station Marblehead, Ohio, medically evacuated a 64-year-old man who was suffering severe head injuries and was unconscious after reportedly falling down stairs on Kelleys Island in Lake Erie Saturday Morning.

Search and rescue controllers at Coast Guard Sector Detroit received the request for a medical evacuation at 12:25 a.m.

A flight surgeon, who makes the ultimate determination on what warrants emergency transport, was contacted and briefed and authorized the medevac.

A boatcrew from Station Marblehead launched aboard a 33-foot Special Purpose Craft–Law Enforcement boat. Once on the island, the boatcrew embarked the man and transported him to Station Marblehead where he was met by awaiting EMS for further transport to Magruder Hospital in Port Clinton, Ohio.

The man’s current condition is unknown.
