Coast Guard medevacs man from freighter south of San Diego

SAN DIEGO — A helicopter crew from Coast Guard Sector San Diego medically evacuated a 55-year-old man who was suffering from internal bleeding from a freighter 250 miles south of San Diego Sunday evening.

The Coast Guard was notified of the Romanian man’s condition Saturday morning. It was determined that the man needed medical attention as soon as possible. The Libra Santos, a 723-foot Antigua and Barbuda-flagged vessel, headed north to get within range of medevac to San Diego.

Just after 2 p.m., Sunday an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter was launched from San Diego to conduct the medevac. A C-130 Hercules plane crew from Air Station Sacramento supported the medevac by locating the ship and providing long range coverage.

The crew hoisted the man from the ship and safely transported him to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, Calif., at 7 p.m
