Coast Guard medevacs man from cruise ship Norwegian Gem

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — The Coast Guard medically evacuated a man after receiving a call for assistance from a cruise ship 28 miles east of Cape Hatteras N.C., Sunday.

At approximately 12:45 p.m. watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector North Carolina received a call from the doctor of the cruise ship Norwegian Gem stating that there was a 57-year-old male who was reported to be bleeding internally and needed to be taken to a hospital.

An MH-60 Jayhawk rescue helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C., was dispatched at approximately 12:50 p.m. to medevac the man and an accompanying nurse from the Norwegian Gem.

At approximately 1:30 p.m., the man and the nurse were delivered to Carteret General Hospital in Morehead City, N.C.
