NEW ORLEANS — The Coast Guard medevaced a man from a cruise ship 180 miles south of Southwest Pass, Wednesday, in the Gulf of Mexico.
Medevaced was Plamen Merdzhanov.
Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector New Orleans command center received a call at approximately 12 p.m., that Merdzhanov, who was a passenger aboard the Carnival Elation, reportedly had an eye infection that could potentially lead to vision loss.
A Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans MH-65C Dolphin helicopter and crew hoisted Merdzhanoz from the aft deck of the Carnival Elation and transported him to West Jefferson Medical Center.
“We treat every case as life-threatening and train accordingly with maximum diligence and vigilance,” said Lt. Joseph Coffman, Air Station New Orleans pilot. “As America’s maritime first responder, we helped him get the medical attention he needed.”
Merdzhanov’s condition is unknown.
