SAN DIEGO – The Coast Guard medically evacuated a 68-year-old man 80 miles south west of Point Loma Saturday morning.

The San Diego Joint Harbor Operations Center (JHOC) received a call just after 2:30 a.m., from the cruise ship Rotterdam stating a passenger on board was experiencing chest pains and requested assistance from the Coast Guard for a medevac.

At the time of the call the cruise ship was 140 miles south of San Diego and decided to turn north to close the gap between the ship and help. At 5:30 a.m., a MH-60T Jayhawk helicopter left Coast Guard Sector San Diego and met with the Rotterdam, which was then only 80 miles south of Point Loma.

The man was hoisted to the helicopter at 6:30 a.m., and transported to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, Calif.
