BOSTON — Coast Guard rescue crews medically evacuated a 50-year-old male from the fishing vessel Ocean Prowler approximately 60 miles east of Nantucket, Mass., Sunday.
Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England received notification from the Ocean Prowler at 3:20 p.m. of a crew member reportedly suffering from chest pains and had been going in and out of consciousness for 15 minutes.
A Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod, Mass., MH-60T Jayhawk helicopter crew immediately launched and arrived on scene at approximately 4:20 p.m. and safely hoisted the man from the Ocean Prowler.
He was taken to awaiting medical personnel at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, Mass.
“Heavy fog and rough waters resulted in 50-yard visibility from 3,500 feet to the surface of the water,” said Lt. Adam Davenport, the aircraft commander. “Communication was key. I am proud of the crew, everyone was on the same page giving input and being heard, especially Petty Officer Joseph Ivy, who’s first operational hoist saved a life tonight. The captain of the Ocean Prowler was completely professional, we maintained communication via VHF channel 16 and he helped the crew handle the trail line to aid in safely hoisting the man. This was the Coast Guard’s fifth hoist from the Ocean Prowler.”
