Coast Guard Medevacs Injured Mariner off Bermuda

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Rescue crews from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C., medevaced a man suffering burn injuries from a merchant ship 326 miles northeast of Bermuda today.

Coast Guard Rescue Coordination Center (RCC) watch standers, here, were contacted by RCC Bermuda requesting assistance in medevacing a 20-year-old, Latvian native, from the motor vessel Clipper Legacy, a 389-foot, Bahamanian flagged tank ship.

Rescue crews and a flight medic onboard a MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter and a C-130 flew to the Clipper Legacy’s location.

The injured man was hoisted from the ship by the helicopter crew and flown to Bermuda and transferred onboard the C-130 and flown to Chambers Field in Norfolk, Va.

After landing, the patient was transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, by EMS personnel, for treatment.
