Coast Guard medevacs injured hunter near Seward, Alaska

60 KodiakANCHORAGE, Alaska — A Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew medevaced an injured 50-year-old man on Montague Island near Seward, Alaska, Wednesday.

The Jayhawk crew safely transported the hunter to Alaska Regional Hospital in Anchorage.

Coast Guard Sector Anchorage watchstanders received a call from a good Samaritan boater who reported a hunter suffering from a gunshot wound onshore and was in need of medical assistance.  The duty flight surgeon recommended the medevac.

“The helicopter crew flew approximately 253 miles to conduct this medevac,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Andrew Sheean, command duty officer.  “Our crews constantly train to conduct these long range missions safely.”

Alaska State Troopers are investigating the incident.

Weather on scene was reported as 16 degrees with 17 mph winds.
