Coast Guard Medevacs Injured Fisherman

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – A Coast Guard rescue helicopter crew from Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C., medevaced an injured fisherman, 37-miles east of Oregon Inlet N.C., this afternoon.

Alex Valero, a 43-year-old Honduran man, working onboard the Erin Renee, an 83-foot commercial fishing vessel, was medevaced by a Coast Guard helicopter crew after suffering an eye injury.

Valero was flown to the Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, in Norfolk, Va., for treatment.

“Conditions today were very good for a rescue. We had good communications with the vessel and their crew was very helpful in ensuring a safe hoist from the ship to the helicopter,” said Lt. Andrew Schanno, a pilot from today’s rescue.
