Coast Guard medevacs injured boater near New Bern, N.C.

NEW BERN, N.C. – The Coast Guard medically evacuated an injured 65-year-old man aboard a recreational boat that went aground in the Bay River near New Bern Monday evening.

The crew of the 53-foot Carver Voyager yacht called the Coast Guard via VHF channel 16 at 4:47 p.m. reporting that the man injured his ribs when he fell down as a result of the grounding.

Coast Guard Sector North Carolina watchstanders consulted with the Coast Guard 5th District duty flight surgeon, who recommended medevac.

After a rescue boat crew from Station Hobucken arrived on scene, they transferred the man, who could no longer stand due to his injuries, back to the station at 6:49 p.m. Emergency medical personnel, who were waiting at the station, brought him to Craven Medical Center in New Bern.

The grounded boat was refloated by Deaton’s Yacht Services and is safely moored at R.E. Mayos Marina in Hobucken.
