Coast Guard medevacs hiker with broken ankle near Yachats, Oregon

65 with basket Los AngelesNEWPORT, Ore. – The Coast Guard assisted local responders in medevacing a hiker, off a cliffside near Yachats, who reportedly suffered a broken ankle, Wednesday morning.

An MH-65 Dolphin aircrew from Coast Guard Air Facility Newport hoisted the injured hiker and transferred the man to emergency medical services who transported the man to Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital in Newport.  

A Yachats Fire and Rescue crew that was on-scene with the injured hiker contacted Coast Guard Sector North Bend watchstanders and requested assistance, due to rising surf conditions in the area. The aircrew launched at about 11 a.m. and transferred the patient to EMS at 11:53 a.m.

“In the event of an emergency, the Coast Guard reminds all outdoor enthusiasts to plan ahead, have a reliable form of communication and to know their own physical limits,” said Petty Officer 3rd Class Derek Metzgar, an operation specialist at Sector North Bend command center. “Individuals should also let someone know where they are going and when they are expected to return.”

The weather at the time of the rescue was reported to be clear for 8 miles with 5 mph winds.
