COQUINA KEY, Fla. — A 66-year-old man was medevaced by Coast Guard Station Cortez crewmembers from his fishing vessel 10 miles west of Longboat Key Monday.
A crewmember aboard the 50-foot fishing vessel Reel Sexy contacted Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg watchstanders at 5 a.m. requesting a medevac for the man who was reported to be suffering from cardiac complications.
Coast Guard watchstanders launched a 25-foot Response Boat – Small crew from Station Cortez to the scene.
“In a medevac case like this, time plays a big factor,” said Petty Officer 3rd Class Sevn Castillo, a crewmember aboard the RBS. “We work with our emergency medical partners throughout Florida to get patients to locations where they can receive the level of care they need as quickly as possible.”
The RBS crew arrived on scene at 6:30 a.m., removed the fisherman and transported him to Coquina Key boat ramp. He was then transferred to awaiting emergency medical personnel and transported to Manatee Memorial Hospital in Bradenton.
