Coast Guard Medevacs Diver Off N.C. Coast

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – A Coast Guard helicopter crew medevaced a woman from a commercial dive boat about 30 miles east of Atlantic Beach, N.C., today.

The vessel Flying Fish reported at 12:30 p.m. that the 32-year-old woman was on the ship’s deck and was initially unresponsive after surfacing from a dive. She reportedly regained consciousness but was disoriented.

A Coast Guard flight surgeon and the Divers Alert Network were briefed and determined that a helicopter rescue crew should evacuate the woman.

An Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C., Jayhawk helicopter crew on a training mission diverted and hoisted the woman at 1:27 p.m. They flew her to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

“Our crew was already out flying, so we were able to get there quickly,” said Lt. Steve Jaudon of Air Station Elizabeth City.
