Coast Guard medevacs cruise ship passenger

CLEARWATER, Fla. – A Coast Guard H-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew medically evacuated a man from cruise ship Ryndam at 8:15 p.m. Saturday, approximately 140 miles southwest of Egmont Key, Fla.

Coast Guard watchstanders at Sector St. Petersburg, Fla., received notification from crewmembers aboard the Ryndam, a 718-foot Netherlands-flagged cruise ship headed to Tampa, Fla., that passenger and American citizen David Williams, 25, was suffering from abdominal pain and distended stomach symptoms.

An Air Station Clearwater Jayhawk helicopter crew launched at 7:15 p.m., after consultation between a Coast Guard flight surgeon and medical personnel aboard Ryndam determined a medevac was necessary.

Once on scene, the helicopter crew hoisted the patient onto the aircraft and transported him to Tampa General Hospital.

Williams condition is unknown.
