Coast Guard Medevac’s Crewmember from Fishing Vessel

SITKA, Alaska – Coast Guard Air Station Sitka launched a MH-60J “Jayhawk” Helicopter to conduct a medical evacuation of a 28 year old male West of Sitka at 1 p.m. yesterday.

The rescue helicopter flew 125 nautical miles west of Sitka to the fishing vessel Chantel Marie’s location, approximately 20 nautical miles southwest of Lituya Bay this afternoon.

Once on scene, the helicopter crew completed a basket hoist to a small clearing on the vessel and brought the patient back to Sitka.

Medical treatment for the hour long flight back to Sitka was provided by the rescue swimmer, Petty Officer 3rd Class Travis Peck, and the duty corpsman, Petty Officer 3rd Class Kevin Thomas.

This was the first operational rescue for both Petty Officer Peck and Petty Officer Thomas.

The patient was suffering from possible appendicitis and was transferred to Sitka EMS upon the helicopters return to Sitka.
