Coast Guard medevacs climber from base of Mount St. Helens

SEATTLE – The Coast Guard hoisted a distressed hiker from the base of Mount St. Helens, Monday.

Coast Guard Air Station Astoria, Ore., received a call from the Wash. State Emergency Operations Center via Cowlitz County, Wash., 911 dispatch at approximately 7:30 p.m., requesting helicopter assistance for a 55-year old male suffering from possible heat related injuries.

Air Station Astoria launched an HH-60J Jayhawk helicopter crew to the Toutle River area at the base of Mount St. Helens.

The helicopter rescue crew hoisted and transported two men and a dog to the Long View/Kelso Airport. Awaiting emergency medical personnel transported the men and dog to the Cowlitz County Fire and Rescue Main Station in Kelso, Wash.

The condition of the 55-year old man is unknown at this time.
