Coast Guard medevacs ailing motor vessel captain off Virginia Beach

medevacPORTSMOUTH, Va. — The Coast Guard medevaced an ailing captain Friday from a motor vessel approximately 12 miles east of Virginia Beach.

Watchstanders at the Coast Guard 5th District Command Center in Portsmouth, Virginia, received a report Friday morning from the 645-foot, U.S.-flagged freight ship Energy Enterprise, stating the male captain was suffering from abdominal pain.

A MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew launched from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, North Carolina, at about noon. The aircrew arrived on scene, hoisted the man and took him to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk where he is reported in stable condition.

Energy Enterprise is currently anchored off Virginia Beach. A relief captain is scheduled to go aboard tomorrow.
