PORTSMOUTH, Va. – A Coast Guard HH-60 Jayhawk helicopter rescue crew transported a 17-month-old boy and his mother from Ocracoke Island, N.C. to Norfolk, Va., Friday.
The boy was suffering from a high fever and respiratory distress.
Coast Guard watchstanders received a call from Ocracoke Emergency Medical Services requesting the immediate transfer of the boy to the Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters in Norfolk. The local life flight assets of Ocracoke were unable to fly due to excessive winds and low visibility.
The boy’s mother said she was “very grateful for the Coast Guard’s service in times of duress.”
