Coast Guard medevacs 1 from bulk cargo carrier in Gulf of Mexico

8th Coast Guard District NewsVENICE, La. — The Coast Guard medevaced a man from a bulk cargo carrier approximately 20 miles south of Southwest Pass, Wednesday, in the Gulf of Mexico.

Medevaced was Rakesh Kumar, 42.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector New Orleans received a report at approximately 9:15 a.m., that Kumar, a crewmember aboard the motor vessel Pine 5, a 600-foot cargo ship, was suffering from possible heart failure.

Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans launched an MH-65C Dolphin helicopter and crew to the scene at approximately 10 a.m. The crew successfully hoisted Kumar from the vessel from a height of 200 feet and transfered him to awaiting emergency medical servces at West Jefferson Medical Center in Marrero.

“Due to the training we do every day as America’s maritime first responders, we were able to quickly respond and get him immediate medical attention,” said Lt. Caitlin Mitchell-Wurster, Air Station New Orleans pilot.

Kumar’s condition is unknown.
