ATLANTIC BEACH, N.C. – A Coast Guard rescue boat crew from Station Fort Macon along with Atlantic Beach Emergency Medical Services assisted a person in distress in Beaufort Sound on the North side of Shackleford Banks, Tuesday.
Watchstanders at Sector North Carolina received a report from the person’s friend stating that he had been bitten on the foot by an unknown marine animal. The 38-year-old man was reported as having a great deal of swelling and pain in his left leg.
The person was medevaced to Station Fort Macon where he was transferred to awaiting EMS personnel and transported to Carteret General Hospital.
“The patients leg was swollen and red. There’s no doubt something bit or stung the man,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Ross Blaylock, a rescue boat crew member.
