Coast Guard, Maui rescue crews searching for possible missing windsurfer

HONOLULU — Rescue personnel from the U.S. Coast Guard and the Maui County Fire Department (MFD) are searching for the owner of a recovered wind surfboard found near Kahului, Maui, at 1 p.m. Monday.

Maui beach security staff reported to the Coast Guard at about 3 p.m. Monday that a broken reddish-orange wind surfboard was found abandoned on the rocks near the shore break in Kahului. The kite from the broken board was floating approximately 60 feet off shore.

Coast Guard search coordinators launched a rescue helicopter crew from Air Station Barbers Point and were on scene at about 4:45 p.m. assisting MFD personnel with the 36-square mile shoreline search.

Rescue personnel are looking for any signs of the missing windsurfer or any other signs of distress.

Neither the Coast Guard nor the MFD have received any reports of overdue persons.
