Coast Guard, Marine Corps, locals search for missing Atlantic Beach swimmer

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – The Coast Guard, local agencies and the Marine Corps are searching for a missing 17-year-old swimmer near Atlantic Beach, N.C., today.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector North Carolina received a call at 8:20 p.m. from the Atlantic Beach Fire Department requesting assistance in locating a 17-year-old male who was observed by a friend entering the water and not returning.

The Atlantic Beach Fire Department, Atlantic Beach Police and the Coast Guard set up an incident command post at the beach Sunday to organize the search efforts.

Helicopter rescue crews from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C., rescue boat crews from Coast Guard Station Fort Macon, N.C., local police and fire rescue personnel searched the area throughout the night.

A rescue boat crew from Coast Guard Station Fort Macon and a helicopter crew from Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C., continue searching today in conjunction with personnel from the local fire and police departments.
