Coast Guard, Marin County Fire Department recover two capsized kayakers

SAN FRANCISCO — One person was rescued by good Samaritans off Dillon Beach in Bodega Bay Wednesday evening. Another person was recovered in the water and transported to a local hospital where he was declared dead.

At 4:49 p.m., Coast Guard Sector San Francisco watchstanders received a report of two kayakers in distress. Rescue crews from Coast Guard Air Station San Francisco and Coast Guard Station Bodega Bay were immediately dispatched.

At 4:53 p.m., Sector San Francisco watchstanders received a 911 relay call from a private citizen reporting they assisted a hypothermic kayaker onto shore. The kayaker was transported by Reach Air Medical Services to a local hospital for further treatment. Rescue crews from Marin County Fire Department established a command post and launched jet skis to conduct shoreline searches for the second missing kayaker.

At approximately 6:30 p.m., a news helicopter relayed information of what appeared to be a person in the water to Air Station San Francisco. The person found was unconscious and unresponsive when hoisted by the Coast Guard helicopter rescue crew and was later identified as the second missing kayaker.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of the kayakers involved in today’s accident,” said Capt. Greg Stump, commander, Sector San Francisco. “Our valued partnerships with local agencies ensured the delivery of the highest level of coordination and service during this tragic event.”
