Coast Guard Locates Pilot of Downed Airplane

MARBLEHEAD, Ohio – U.S. Coast Guard, state, county and local response agencies have recovered the pilot of a Cessna 172 plane that crashed off the eastern shore of Kelleys Island.

Jeff Hutchison, 46, was located at approximately 8:18 p.m., more than 700 yards off of Kelleys Island in 18-20 feet of water.

Earlier in the evening, response agencies located and recovered Jeremy Hutchison, 9, passenger and son of the pilot.

A third passenger, also son of the pilot, was recovered by a Good Samaritan, Mr. Chuck Herndon, who heard his calls for help and rowed his boat to assist. The young man was brought to shore, then transported to St. Vincent Hospital in Toledo, Ohio.
