Coast Guard locates overdue sailing vessel

NEW ORLEANS, La. — Coast Guard crews located a father and daughter who did not return from a sailing trip on Lake Pontchartrain, early Wednesday morning.

A father and daughter went out onto the lake for the first time in their newly purchased sailboat and when the pair did not return home when expected, a family member contacted Coast Guard Sector New Orleans Command Center watchstanders at approximately 9:00 p.m., Tuesday. The Coast Guard launched a search for the missing pair with a 25-foot response boat and crew from small boat Station New Orleans and an MH-65C rescue helicopter and crew from Air Station New Orleans.

The rescue helicopter crew located the disabled sailboat just after midnight, Wednesday, anchored approximately 12 miles southeast of Slidell.  The helicopter crew guided the Coast Guard response boat to the sailboat’s location, where the father and daughter were safely taken off and transported to Coast Guard Station New Orleans, where they were met by family members.
