HONOLULU – Coast Guard crews have located a sailing vessel which was reported overdue west of Lanai at approximately 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
The four mariners aboard the 34-foot sailing vessel Larina are in good condition. They were located by a Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point aircrew piloting an HC-130 Hercules aircraft who confirmed them visually and via VHF radio. The four mariners were not in any distress and reported no injuries. The Hercules crew asked the names of all crewmembers and confirmed they are safe.
The crew aboard the Larina filed an informal float plan with a friend ashore, stating that they were heading to Manele Bay in Lanai on a seven-day trip. The Coast Guard highly encourages mariners to file a float plan with a responsible friend, family member or their local harbormaster. The plan should include the date and time of your departure, where you intend to go and when you intend to return. If you do not arrive or return on the specified date, the Coast Guard can try to contact you and initiate a search and rescue operation if there is necessity.
Coast Guard Sector Honolulu command center personnel were notified of the overdue vessel by the reporting party at 6:48 p.m. Friday.
The reporting party stated she was last in contact with the vessel at 5:45 p.m. Thursday. During the phone call she was told the trip was going well and to expect a call back later in the day. The call back never came.
The crew consists of two men, Travis Aborn and Sam Gary, along with two women, Elizabeth Miles and a woman only identified as Alyssa.
