Coast Guard locates overdue father and son near Yorktown, VA

Mid Atlantic Coast Guard NewsPORTSMOUTH, Va. — The Coast Guard and Virginia Marine Resources Commission located and assisted an overdue 31-year-old father and 7-year-old son on a personal watercraft in the York River near Yorktown, Friday.

At approximately 8 p.m., an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew located the overdue people aground in a marsh and vectored in a VMRC boatcrew to assist.

A VMRC boatcrew arrived on scene and escorted the personal watercract to the Gloucester Point boat ramp.

A VMRC member contacted Coast Guard Sector Hampton Roads watchstanders at approximately 6:15 p.m., reporting the father and son were overdue on their return trip from the vicinity of Naval Weapons Station Yorktown to Gloucester Point.

Sector Hampton Roads watchstanders issued an urgent marine information broadcast and launched crews aboard a 25-foot Response Boat – Small from Coast Guard Station Milford Haven in Hudgins, an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C., and VMRC responded with two boatcrews to assist in the search.

There were no reports of injuries.
