Coast Guard locates missing sailors

NEW ORLEANS – The Coast Guard has located the two missing sailors aboard the sailing vessel Fly Away south of Fort Walton Beach, Fla. at approximately 5 p.m. today.

The two missing sailors, Charles Dagget and Thomas Edwards were located after they contacted Coast Guard Station Ft. Walton Beach reporting that they had been pushed south by wind after the engine onboard their 35-foot sail boat had become disabled.

Dagget and Edwards reported to Coast Guard crews that they are currently sailing to Fort Walton Beach.

Coast Guard and Air Force search and rescue crews searched more than 31,000 square-miles of the Gulf of Mexico and the Intracoastal Waterway between Clearwater, Fla. and Corpus Christi, Texas.

Units participating in the search include:

  • Coast Guard Air Station Corpus Christi, Texas
  • Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans
  • Coast Guard Aviation Training Center in Mobile, Ala.
  • Coast Guard Station Gulf Port, Miss.
  • Coast Guard Station Pascagoula, Miss.
  • Coast Guard Station Dauphin Island, Ala.
  • Coast Guard Station Destin, Fla.
  • Coast Guard Station Panama City, Fla.
  • Coast Guard Station Pensacola, Fla.
  • C-130 search plane from Patrick Air Force Base, Fla.

The Coast Guard urges all mariners to always wear your life jacket, carry a working marine radio and emergency signaling devices while boating.
