Coast Guard locates missing hunters, continues search for “mayday” caller

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Coast Guard responders have located the two overdue hunters on the southwest end of Montague Island today. Responders continue to search for the source of a “mayday” call near Seldovia.

After a coordinated effort between the 110-foot Coast Guard Cutter Long Island, Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak, the Coast Guard Auxiliary and the Alaska State Troopers a Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter located the hunters in no distress on the beach at the southwest end of Montague Island this evening. They are waiting for the next high tide to launch their vessel and return to Whittier. They are maintaining a communications schedule with the Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard is continuing the search for the source of the “mayday” call near Seldovia received at 10 p.m. Tuesday.

Searches were conducted today by the Coast Guard and Coast Guard Auxiliary. Another search will be conducted tonight utilizing an HH-65 Dolphin helicopter and crew from Air Station Kodiak. The crew will use night vision goggles to assist the search effort.
