Coast Guard Locates Crewmembers from Sunken Ship

JUNEAU, Alaska – The Coast Guard located two crewmembers from a sunken fishing vessel near False Pass late Thursday night.

The fishing vessel (F/V) Andromeda had been reported overdue by the vessel’s owner at approximately 9:30 p.m. The vessel was reportedly transiting in the company of two other vessels between Port Moller and False Pass.

The Coast Guard District 17 Command Center issued an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast (UMIB) and commenced preliminary communication efforts. After receiving amplifying information from several sources, the Coast Guard launched the Cutter Mellon’s HH-65 Dolphin helicopter to search the last known location of the fishing vessel and nearby shoreline.

Shortly after arriving at the search area, the helicopter crew located two men on the beach in survival suits and hoisted them aboard. The helicopter transferred the patients safely to Cold Bay Clinic.

The Coast Guard Cutter Mellon, homeported in Seattle, was on routine patrol in the Bering Sea.

The conditions of the survivors are unknown at this time.
