Coast Guard locates crew from overturned canoe

SEATTLE – A Coast Guard response boat crew from Station Bellingham, Wash., located two people from an overturned canoe two miles south of Anacortes, Wash., Thursday.

Coast Guard Group/Air Station Port Angeles, Wash., was notified at 12:25 p.m. that a kayak had been spotted overturned in the water. An HH-65C Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Group/Air Station Port Angeles and a 33-foot response boat crew from Station Bellingham deployed to assist.

The boat crew discovered that the overturned vessel was a canoe and not a kayak, and that there had been two people on board. The first person was located on shore and the second person was located unresponsive in the water.

Both people were transported to local emergency response crews standing by on shore.

Both people were wearing life jackets. The cause of the canoe overturning and the condition of the person found in the water is not known at this time.
