Coast Guard locates body in Caminada Pass

NEW ORLEANS — The Coast Guard located a body approximately 1.5 miles southwest of Caminada Pass, west of Grand Isle, La., Tuesday May 19, 2009 at approximately 3:30 p.m.

A Coast Guard MH-65C Dolphin rescue helicopter from Air Station New Orleans located, recovered and transported the body to the Exxon helicopter pad in Grand Isle, where the body was transferred to an awaiting ambulance.

Coast Guard Sector New Orleans received a call from Grand Isle Police Department at 6:56 a.m., reporting that six people were swept away off jetty by a wave in Caminada Pass, approximately six miles west of Grand Isle. Five of the six people swam to shore.

Involved in the search were:

  • A Coast Guard 33-foot smallboat and crew from Grand Isle, La.
  • Two MH-65C Dolphin rescue helicopters and crews from Air Station New Orleans
  • Grand Isle Police Department
  • Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries
  • Grand Isle Fire Department
