BOSTON — Coast Guard and local authorities recovered a missing scuba diver Thursday off Rockport.

Crews from a Massachusetts State Police dive team recovered the 47-year-old man at approximately 8:45 a.m., about 25 yards from his original dive site.

“With the help of our partner agencies, we were able to quickly respond to the incident, which led to a thorough search effort and provided closure to the family,” said Cmdr. Marc Sennick, chief of response for Coast Guard Sector Boston. “We would like to emphasize to divers to always operate with a partner and make sure someone knows your dive plan.”

Emergency dispatchers contacted watchstanders at Sector Boston at approximately 5:30 p.m. Wednesday to report the missing diver and to request assistance.

Crews searched for more than 20 hours and covered an area of 71 square nautical miles.

Search crews included:

  • Coast Guard Station Gloucester
  • Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod
  • Coast Guard Cutter Reef Shark
  • Massachusetts State Police Dive Team
  • Rockport Fire Department Dive Team
  • Rockport Harbormaster
  • Beverly Fire Department
