Coast Guard, local officials searching for missing man in western Lake Erie

25-foot response boatCLEVELAND — The U.S. Coast Guard and local authorities are searching western Lake Erie near Turtle Island, Ohio, for a missing man who was expected back Monday night and did not return.

Missing is 35 year old Brenton Burton.

Around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, the watchstander at Coast Guard Station Toledo, Ohio, and the Monroe County, Michigan, Sheriff’s office were notified that Burton was missing. It was reported that he departed Monday morning from Halfway Marina around 9 a.m. on a trip to Turtle Island, Ohio, and he planned to return by sunset.

A boat crew from Coast Guard Station Toledo, aboard a 25-foot Response Boat–Small, was launched as well as an air crew from Coast Guard Air Station Detroit, aboard a Dolphin helicopter.

Watchstanders worked with the man’s cell phone provider in an attempt to locate him. It was reported that the phone was last used Monday just after 11:30 p.m.

At 8:50 a.m., search crews located an overturned boat fitting the reported description near Turtle Island as well as a gas can near Luna Pier.

Both the boat and gas can were found inside the search area.

Searching are: Coast Guard Station Toledo, Coast Guard Air Station Detroit, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department, the Toledo Fire Department, the Frenchtown Fire Department and the Jerusalem Township dive team.
