Coast Guard, local agencies searching for overdue mariners

CHARLESTON, S.C. — Crewmembers from Coast Guard Air Station Savannah, Ga., and Coast Guard Sector Charleston, S.C., along with members from Charleston County Sheriff’s Office, Charleston County Fire Department and South Carolina Department of Natural Resources are searching for two overdue mariners in the vicinity of Steamboat Creek, the Dawho River and the North Edisto River.

The two mariners are Michael Royston, 29 years old, and Amy Claytor, 33 years old.

Watchstanders in the Sector Charleston command center were notified of the situation via the Sheriff’s department at approximately 8:13 p.m., Sunday night. The report stated the two mariners had launched their 14-foot johnboat Saturday night from Steamboat Landing in Edisto, S.C. and did not return.

Coast Guard crews aboard a 29-foot rescue boat from Coast Guard Station Charleston were launched at 8:24 p.m., Sunday, and a helicopter
aircrew from Savannah was diverted at 8:30 p.m., to assist in the search. Crews from Charleston County Sheriff’s Office are searching with two of their vessels. A DNR crew is also using a vessel to search for the two mariners.
