Coast Guard, local agencies searching for missing swimmer off Sullivan’s Island Beach, S.C.

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Search and rescue crews from the Coast Guard and partner agencies have been searching for a 22-year-old Caucasian woman after she was reported missing while swimming near Sullivan’s Island Beach, S.C., Thursday. ??

The Coast Guard Sector Charleston operations center was notified via 911 dispatch at approximately 3:57 p.m. Thursday about a possible missing swimmer off of 21st Ave., at Sullivan’s Island Beach. Two friends of the swimmer later confirmed the disappearance.

A 25-foot rescue boat crew from Coast Guard Station Charleston, an HH-65 rescue helicopter crew from Air Facility Charleston, the 225-foot Coast Guard Cutter Oak, Marine Patrol, the Sullivan’s Island Police and Fire Department, Mt. Pleasant Fire Department, Isle of Palms Fire Department, Charleston County Sheriff’s Department, EMS and Volunteer Rescue Squad have searched 15-square-miles since the initial distress call.

Various assets concluded the search at dark however the 87-foot Coast Guard Cutter Tarpon, homeported in Tybee Island, Ga., will continue efforts throughout the night.

The name of the missing swimmer is being withheld following proper notification of next-of-kin.
